Overview

This tutorial demonstrates how to use SquirrelMail to adjust the sensitivity of your individual spam filter.

Step 1

Open a browser such as Internet Explorer on any computer with an internet connection. Enter "http://mail.website.com" where "website.com" is your domain into the address bar. For our example we're using "http://mail.ripleyphotographic.com".

Step 2

When SquirrelMail appears enter your username where "jsmith@website.com" is your email address. Follow this with your password, then click Login.

Step 3

Once logged in, click the Options link from the top menu.

Step 4

Select Spam Filter Configuration from the list of available options.

Step 5

Multiple options are now available which allow you to fine tune the spam filters to your needs.

Personal Allow / Deny Address List

The first setting is your Personal Allow / Deny Address List. This lets you setup lists of email accounts that are always allowed through the filters.

You may use "*" as a wildcard to allow a large number of addresses at one time. As an example, a Whitelist From "*@greensprocket.com" will not mark any message that claims to be from greensprocket.com as spam.

You can also use these settings to create other lists to block address from getting through. Follow the same procedure but choose Blacklist From in the Type drop-down box.

General Settings

The General Settings area allows you to adjust spam filter sensitivity. In the Spam Score area select your desired level of filtering. We recommend a setting of 5 but increasing this number will let more messages through the filters. If you find messages are being blocked try a setting of 8. If too much spam is getting through try a lower setting such as 2.

Acceptable Languages

The Acceptable Languages field lets you choose the language you expect to receive messages. This will help reduce spam in foreign languages. Hold down the CTRL key on your keyboard to select multiple options when clicking with your mouse.

When ready click Save Settings to complete your configuration changes.

Step 6

When you're finished, always click Sign Out to prevent others from reading your email.
